BAY LA RUTA MAYA RIVER CHALLENGE

In 2016 for the first time BAY formed a Canoe team to partake in the annual Belikin La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge. Our paddlers were Elvis Sutherland, Derocy Haylock, and Glen Sutherland.

These young men had so much determination and enthusiasm to partake in the La Ruta Maya that our board members did not hesitate and immediately jumped on the opportunity to get involved and support them in this endeavor. As dedicated and motivated athletes, they along with members of the board agreed to form a committee to assist in their very intensive training. The Belikin La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge is a gruesome four-day event with a distance of 180 miles of paddling. Team BAY registered and competed. Team BAY was crowned the 2016 Belikin La Ruta Maya Intramural Champs with a time of 17 hours, 47 minutes 26 seconds. They also ranked 7 th overall, being the first intramural team with this rank.

In 2017 a new team was formed that included Cesario (Steven) Choc, Jimmy Donis, and James (Tyler) Choc. They competed in the Family Category at the La Ruta Maya Race where they placed third. They also competed at the Tacos Fest Race on November 26th, 2017 where they placed second in the Junior Category
