BAY VIOLENCE REDUCTION PROJECT
In June 2018, BAY became one of the successful grant recipients of the UNICEF Community-based Project for Violence Prevention. The BAY Violence Reduction Project was aimed to reduce, sustain, rebuild, and reclaim safety and security in Belmopan and Roaring Creek. This six months project targeted young people from ages 11 to 17 who may have been exposed to violence, or are at risk of becoming exposed to so form of armed violence.
The five components of the projects included:
1. Training of Youth Facilitators: 10 youth leaders will be trained in facilitating sessions that include Violence Education, Conflict Resolution, Anger Management, Team Building, and Drug Awareness.
2. Lock-in Training: 120 at-risk young people attended training sessions focusing on Violence Education, Conflict Resolution, Anger Management, Team Building, and Drug Awareness.
3. Visits to High Schools: 500 high school students were encouraged to remain violence free and drug-free via presentations by the youth leaders.
4. Sports Marathon: A BAY Violence and Drug-free sports marathon was conducted in Roaring Creek Village.
5. Community Service: A park in Roaring Creek Village was rehabilitated and reopened as a Violence and Drug-free zone.
